Student and Educator Perspectives

The following podcasts KUMEC were created by the King’s Undergraduate Medical Education in the Community Teacher Development team to share stories, experiences, challenges and new perspectives of Hot Topics in Healthcare Education. Since the pandemic we have focused on many more stories of intersectionality and inclusivity:

 

Black Students Experiences of Discrimination (28mins) following the murder of George Floyd the King’s College London African Caribbean Medical Society wrote an open letter to Faculty with suggestions about what we could do better. Their letter sparked many other ACMSs to do the do the same. We spoke to the President Olayinka Amire and VP Alexandra Sanyaolu to really listen and hear what they were saying and it started the Reverse Mentoring pilot project at King’s College London.

Tackling Discrimination in Medical Schools (18 mins) Student Gurdas Singh, discusses his time as the BMA Student Co-Chair with Dr Rini Paul. They cover his work and vision with the the BMA Charter Against Racial Harassment, what individuals and institutions can do to tackle discrimination, and a shared dislike of mandatory training and the term BAME.

Decolonising the Curriculum (31mins) Conversation with two now qualified doctors Natasha Chilambo and Nivethitha Ganapathiram about why they set up Structure & the Clinic, we cover knowledge, power, epistemic injustice, Western medicine, diversifying vs decolonising and politics in Medicine.

Widening Participation – Are we there yet? (25 mins) With Award Winning medical student James Frater about making our institutions more equitable especially focusing on access and more for those of Caribbean descent.

Leading the way for Justice – Interview with two EDI Leads (1hour) Drs Lois Haruna-Cooper (UCL) Shuangyu Li (KCL) share their experiences and challenges of trying to implement and sustain genuine change for EDI work to improve outcomes for medical students, colleagues and patients. We cover drivers for this work, the power of allies and relationships and top tips for healthcare educators

The experience of two of our black GP teachers (47mins) During Black History month in 2020 we spoke to two of our GP teachers Drs Matilda Esan and Tim Modiano about their experiences as black doctors, how to best support students, patients and colleagues and their hopes for the future

KCL Healthcare Student Schwartz Rounds (16mins) – Story from one of our nursing students Kaynath about discrimination and how sharing her story at a Schwartz Round helped.

Trans Healthcare for Educators (28 mins) with Eva Echo (She/They), Activist, Educator, Director of Birmingham Pride who also works with the Crown Prosecution Services about their coming out journey, accessing healthcare and leaning into our privilege and empathy to support those who need it.

Supporting Students and Colleagues with a Disability A 20 min conversation with Dr Grace Spence Green, challenging ableism, representation, how we can avoid uncomfortable conversations by admitting when we are not sure what to do and so much more.

 

The following podcasts were created as part of the University of Leeds Humans of Healthcare series. Staff and students share their challenges, promoting open discussion and the importance of care for those learning and working in healthcare (we do not have to be superheros). BMA Charter to tackle Racial Harassment (47 mins), students and staff (Yasmin Kader speaking on the BMA charter and Robina Mir and Mrs Farhana Mulla as the Faculty of Medicine and Health Freedom to Speak up Guardians).

Barriers to Getting into Medical School (33 mins) second year medical student speaks about barriers she faced when getting into medical school and how she overcame them.

Having a disability as a Medical Student (19 mins), a first year medical student at speaks about her experience study medicine after receiving a multiple sclerosis diagnosis in 2021.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (42 mins), Bridgette Bewick, Associate Professor in Psychological Health, Wellbeing and Education, on leading on EDI and belonging.

Working with learning difficulties and autism (32 mins), Alison Conyer, Head of the Learning Difficulties and Autism Service within the Leeds teaching Hospital Trust, talks about how the service works and how it was impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.
